Ms. Arkyta DeBerry, founder and visionary behind The Lunch Counter, brings over 20 years of experience in the food industry shaped by a deep connection to community and culture. Guided by her grandmother, who once asked her to sit and observe the world around her during a visit to a local Woolworth’s store, she learned early the importance of understanding "where you are from." That moment stayed with her as she looked to turn pain into purpose, creating a space for healing and dignity.

The Lunch Counter is rooted in the history of the lunch counter sit-ins, where Black Americans sat in protest, claiming space, dignity, and the right to be served. It is a symbol of having a seat at the table, standing up for your own, and refusing to be moved when access is denied.
Our mission is to create a lively, inclusive farmers market and supporting programs that connect local growers, artisans, food producers, and community members within the Roseland Community of Chicago and surrounding areas. We’re increasing community resources, food access, and harmony.
